So I am pretty sure I have a head gasket leak, I am loosing coolant. I can see oil on the bottom of the engine on one side where it has been leaking (from bad gasket?). I also have bubbles coming up in the coolant reservoir tank. I do not have smoke coming out of my exhaust and I have never had an overheating issue just loss of coolant and very very small amounts of oil. I was wondering when the next install day may be so I may come by and get another opinion. If it does end up being the head gasket is that too large of a job for install days/weekends? Thanks for the input everyone

I don't think we have another install day planned soon - we're all focused on getting through Scoobapalooza right now, lol. But at the next one we can definitely pull the spark plugs and poke around. AFAIK JP does not yet have an engine hoist, so you'd need to follow this method or similar (should work on an impreza): www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f66/how-replace-ej25-head-gaskets-without-removing-engine-57335/ I disagree with his headgasket advice, though; I'm under the impression OEM is fine for the turbo engines. If you are planning on having the head surfaces machined (which is usually recommended afaik), then you won't be able to complete this in one weekend. Otherwise, it sounds like a long one-day job (like, start at 9 am, plan on going to 10 pm) with someone experienced, or a Saturday-Sunday job if no one there has done it before. Also FYI, if you ever wanted a built engine and were planning on putting it together yourself, this is a good excuse to do it. You could either drop pistons in while everything is apart, or build a spare engine and swap them instead of doing head gaskets. Or build a spare short block and prep the head surfaces, then reuse your old heads. Also also FYI, if you plan on running above 20 psi boost or so, it might be a good idea to put ARP head studs in instead of the OEM ones. IIRC besthaticouldo stretched the headstuds on his car from too much awesome.

Or you could be in the same boat I am in, my coolant cross over pipe is leaking, and my oil leak when I bought the car was just failed valve cover gaskets. Hope for the best not the worst when it comes to repairs, unless you just want a reason to tear apart an engine. I don't ever remember the 2.0s to have head gasket issues through but you never know.

Oh yeah I could pull the spark plugs, never done it but i have watched videos lol. That is a nice writeup for the head gasket without removing the engine I just watched a video yesterday on the same thing and it didnt sound too complicated just basically taking alot out. And I definetly would have someone check out the heads surface and have it machined if need be ( although I havent had any overheating issues) so I am hoping they are alright. I would love to build an engine but I am not sure if I have the time and money to do that at this moment and I would have to do alot more research begore I started that on what I would parts and how much power I would be looking at. I honestly just want to have my car fixed and driving without worry The future for the car is suspension, bushings, then tbe and stage 2 pro tune on cobb ap ( i feel that this would be plenty of power for me) And it very well could be the valve cover gasket as well because I do get a smell of burning oil when I am stopped. How would I go about checking the coolant cross over pipe isnt it below the intake manifold? Im going to go poke around again. Thanks for the information ill keep an update

I just know mine is leaking because I have coolant that will pool on top of the head/block if it goes long periods of time just sitting in the garage.

hmm yeah thats not a sign of this , i do have power steering fluid that sits on top of the block sometimes and I can see where it is coming from on the power steering pump. I have replaced the gasket on top.
For this the coolant was leaking out of the top of the radiator from the cap (mishimoto rad) They sent me a new one so i figured the problem was solved then I drove to the city (about an hour on the highway) and back and then I checked my coolant levels and they had gone from the FULL line on the reservoir to the LOW line. Then I got under the car and noticed oil residue on the bottom of the engine up the side and on the oil filter. Then after I researched some more on the head gasket issue someone showed how they had oil residue on the bottom the engine that looked just like what I saw on mine so I figured loosing coolant and a little oil could be the problem..
I only have about 80k miles.

yup i got the new radiator cap from mish and that solved the problem of disappearing coolant. The smell of oil when i stop is still there. Thanks for the information
