I have run into a bit of an issue with the steering / crossmember update on my 98 legacy and could use some help/advice.
I got the crossmember and steering rack on today and after trying to adjust the toe setting I believe that something is wrong. I don't have anything to get a completely accurate toe measurement, but it is quite obvious that something is off. Measuring from rotor to rotor on the front I got 58 1/4" and the back I got 57". That is with the toe adjustment all the way in on both sides.
I have a crossmember from a 2010 WRX and a steering rack supposedly from a 08-11 STI. I am using the original lower control arms and added two washers to the back on each side where the control arm bushing fits into the crossmember.
I have a couple of ideas as to why this is so off. First is that the steering rack was not from a WRX or STI or is just too damn long for some reason.
Second is that the newer models (08-12) have longer control arms (maybe??).
Not sure what else would make such a difference? Maybe the spindle is a bit different on the newer ones?? I looked at some pics online but could not tell much of a difference that would account for the toe issue.
I would appreciate it greatly if anyone that has 02-07 or 08-11+ Impreza could take a couple of quick measurements and post them here to help figure out what is going on.
One measurement is the lower control arm from the center of the bushing in the crossmember to the bolt that connects to the spindle.
On my 98 leggy this is about 14 1/4".
The other measurement would be from tie rod end to tie rod end total length.
This is 55 1/2" from bolt to bolt on the leggy.
If anyone has any additional information that would shed some light on this I would love to hear it.
On an up note the crossmember was pretty easy to get installed and fits nicely, I did have to get some longer bolts to go through the subframe and the crossmember but that was a piece of cake. The steering rack fits nicely as well except for seeming to be too long.
