Hey guys, had a little incident on Saturday night. my power steering pump must have been leaking for maybe a week or so and i noticed when i was got to my friends place Saturday night i saw smoke coming out from under the hood, popped the hood and saw that the fluid from the pump casing leaked onto my header wrap and caused a small fire on the wrap. its not spilling out of the pump, just slightly leaking from the casing.
I've been looking under the hood every time i shut the car down and inspecting fluid level and doing a visual inspection. I have a bottle of Dex III for the pump fluid reservoir, a can of brake cleaner to clean off any leaking fluid off the pump and my halon fire extinguisher in the car incase i see any more flames.
no parts stores currently have any pumps in stock and wont be able to get one shipped until a week or so. how hard is it to install the new pump once i got it. would anybody be able to help me with the install? I can supply adult beverages and lunch. I've never had to put one on before and it looks like a pain.
thanks guys

Im gonna swap the one on my RS to an STI one soon. You can come over and help if you want, see how it goes. You should consider rebuilding yours, they be EXPENSIVE!

where you live at? Orileys quoted me $134.00 for a remanufactured one with a $28.00 core.
is there a difference at all between a standard WRX and the STI pump?

Im in Defiance. Ill try to give some warning, but with waiting on parts, and having a 1 year old, I try to get things done around here in spurts. Ill give a heads up if I can. As for a remanned PS pump, I dunno, I would research around, see how others had luck with that.

found out that an STI pump has hose fittings in a slightly different place. i found a write up on nasioc on how to do the pump and that it is rebuildable if needed

Just make sure to get those fittings PERFECTLY lined up when you thread everything back on. Especially if there's banjo bolts. Don't try to repair any lines or fittings, as those are hard lines that tend to have flared connections. Best bet is to replace the line if you can. Just a word of advice. Between that and making sure you do a full rebuild and clean, clean, clean the guts of that pump. If you think it's clean enough, clean some more. Last thing you need is a piece of metal or other debris getting into the tight-tolerance areas of the pump and locking it up. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that in there in case you didn't think about it. Good luck guys!
