I am looking to recharge the A/C system in my RX. The original compressor had the bearing fail so I had the R-12 evacuated and am replacing the compressor with a used one I bought on another forum. I see a number of people selling cans of R-12 on Craigslist locally. This would be the ideal refrigerant to recharge with since I wouldn't have to replace all the seals and O-rings in the system. Does anyone here have a vacuum pump and the gauges necessary to charge an A/C system? If so, would they be willing to help me do it? I have the full Subaru shop manual for my car, but having the help of someone who has done a system charge before would be a definite help.

I doubt someone is going to have a recharge system, they are way to expensive for most hobbyist to buy

Not sure of anyone in this group that has what you're looking for. There are a few shops in the area though that could help you out. Two of the non-dealership shops that are recommended around here are vigilantmotorsports and EcoTech Import Automotive. Both are on the forums here as well.

I personally would consider converting over to 134 while there is not pressure in the system (kits are like $20) and replace the receiver/dryer too.
You would know that their shouldn't be problems with the system and you can get 134 a lot cheaper and legally.
Just my .02 take it as you will

Just my .02 take it as you will I ended up doing a lot of reading yesterday about charging the system. I came to the conclusion that doing the R134a conversion would be the best thing to do. Trying to do R12 would mean getting a set of gauges with R12 connections which is probably impossible or prohibitively expensive. I ordered a new receiver/dryer and expansion valve along with a set of O-rings. Buying the R134a will save me a lot of money compared to R12 and be easier if I need to do anything else to it in the future. I also went to AutoZone and bought a set of R12 to R134a plug converters. Do you have a vacuum pump and R134a gauges? They should hook right up to the converter plugs I bought.
