Does it have fluid?

yes it has fluid, it only happens when there is little to no pressure on the drivetrain.

sounds like bearing noise to me, possibly the diff carrier bearings?

I had the car on jacks and when I would move the tire there would be kind of a loud clunk after the"slack " is taken out. If that makes any sense. So that makes me think that it's a gear. But I'm not really sure the operation of the diff. Either way its going to be a pain to fix

You can definitely be short a tooth on a diff and have it still mostly work. Friend with an 04 focus did that from clutch kicking too much.

Would It be worth it to try and rebuild it or just buy a new diff?

If it's a bearing, probably worth fixing (wasn't hard on a friend's '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee). If it's a gear tooth, I'd have a hard time not upgrading to an LSD. My friend with the broken gear tooth on his diff, it does make more of a clunk under hard turning and acceleration than the whine/grind of a bearing. He's driven it (hard) that way for a couple of years now, though, so you might still have time to hold out for an STI driveline here. I wouldn't wait if it's a bearing, though. Do a little digging, but you might be able to drain the fluid and look at the gears through the fill/drain plugs. It'll be pretty obvious if something's wrong with the gears. Otherwise, I'm not too familiar yet with differential diagnostics, so definitely post up what you end up doing to verify the issue. Also, in case you mean you're not sure about how differentials in general work, here's a howstuffworks on it, and here's a good old 1950s-style video.

honestly your first step should be to drain the fluid and see if there are any shavings in the oil. that'll tell you something right there.
if you find nothing there, crack the pumpkin open and see what you can maybe. clean it out, new gasket, new fluid and see what happens. it's a pain in the ass and not money you wanna spend. but its relatively cheap, i mean 7 buck for fluid and maybe 7 for a new gasket. it's worth it.

Ditto on what besthaticouldo said. My car makes a similar noise to that with light load on the drive train (coasting while in gear). Hasn't made a clunk or anything (yet). Now, I haven't cracked open the pumpkin, so I may be worse off than I'm realizing. However, cracking open the diff and making sure everything is OK is my next endeavor when I tackle my brake upgrade. Not sure how old your Subie is, or if it is even under warranty, but it wouldn't hurt to take it to the dealer if it is under warranty and have them do a fluid change and check for metal shavings. I had mine changed out for a little over $40 total for both the front and rear. Having them crack the pumpkin open may hike that up a bit, but still worth it.

I don't think Subaru has a 14 year warranty lol but yea I'm getting quotes for a MAF sensor and a rear diff gasket as we speak.

HAHAHAH, no they don't. Not even Hyundai does.
If you need help with anything let us know. Best way to look for shaving is drain it into a pan (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Blitz-7-5-qt-round-oil-drain-pan/_/N-25yj?itemIdentifier=475368&_requestid=676645) then go over it with a magnet, through the fluid because you might not be able to see em.

Yea The only problem is that I can't have the car down for more than a day and I'd rather not have to dig into it several times. So I need to make sure that my diagnostic is correct the first time.
Plus if I'm going to dig into it might as well do a rebuild, (I.e. bearings, races etc).
So the way I look at it is
Rebuild kit + replace broken gear
Just a rebuild kit
Or just replace the diff.

Honestly a used diff will be much cheaper than a rebuild, and will obviously take a lot less time to just swap diffs than removing a rebuilding one, especacially if you don't have the right tools. The only issue with used is you may run the risk of inheriting some one else's issues.

Ok so I got it back up on jacks and the noise is coming from the front end of the rear diff, about 3 inches from where the driveshaft connects. Also I noticed that when the tires were spinning that the front right tire wasn't spinning at all and the front left was spinning faster than the rear two, is that just the awd getting confused or is that a problem? When I drive the car it doesn't pull to a certain side so I'm assuming that its just the awd being confused.

thats probably because you have (IIRC) an open front diff. so its sensing you don't have traction and trying to compensate.

Correct open front diff is what is causing only one front wheel to spin.

Ahh yea that makes sense, I do believe the noise is coming from a pinion bearing. So I guess it's time for a new rear diff.
So if anybody has a 4.11 LSD let me know
