There really isn't much difference in terms of what is changed within your ECU between the Cobb AccessPort (from here on out we will call it an AP) and Open Source tuning. However, the method of changing the code is different. Also, there are subtle differences in terminology with AP tuning vs. Open Source tuning so (hopefully) this thread will aid in understanding the differences between them.
First, READ READ READ! Do your homework before you purchase anything and/or start modifying your ECU. Your ECU is the brain of your car, and you don't want to do brain surgery if you're not a doctor! An AP is a device used to not only read and flash your ECU, but it is also used in monitoring and logging the necessary information needed to properly tune your car. The links below will help in understand what is involved and aid you in making the right decision.
First, check out some of the support pages and documentation found at Cobb's website.

Then, register a free account on Cobb's site so you have access to their support forums. With this login, read through ALL of their FAQ's and other items BEFORE you purchase. Remember, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Lastly, after you've been working with your AP for awhile and are comfortable with the tuning basics. Check out the supplemental software AccessTuner Race. It's still a beta and regularly updated, but there is a lot of support via the Cobb support forums and you'll be able to log and monitor much more data than just using the AP alone. This is also the same software that the pros use to tune your vehicle with the only difference being that theres is able to share maps. It cost them $2500, but its free to you.

Currently you have 3 options when purchasing an AP.
