Well I decided im going to paint my wheels black. Was wondering if any of you guys have done this before or have any tried and proven methods of doing this. I decided against powder coating due to this thread. forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1793970Would like to have a semi to gloss look.

IIRC, there are quality powder coaters that have a low-temperature process. You are pretty much looking for someone that advertises "safe for aged aluminum." Make sure they've got a warranty either way. I think besthaticouldo has powdercoated wheels before; he might have some advice.

that thread is a bunch of bullshit and conjecture.
go to a powdercoater that knows what they're doing and they'll be better than painting and far more durable.
my advans are powdercoated and they've stood up big time.
i'd talk to gateway powdercoating in st charles and tell them that you want them to use low heat.

If you do change your mind about powdercoating, Gateway Powdercoating would be the one to call. If you do want to go ahead with painting your wheels on your own you might try picking Nick's (storyworm) brain for some advice on painting them (prep, paint, finish, etc).

I would not recommend Gateway Powder Coating unless you are willing to wait at least 2-3 weeks... I do not have first hand experience but a few friends just used them and it took forever.
Nick would be the best route for painting, however I know he doesn't want to take on any outside jobs until he gets his car finished.

I'm also thinking of selling my wheels...if they fit and you like them, they're already black and I have 5 of them.

They were decently fast, but they're price was a bit higher per piece. They usually do 1 off stuff. Which means they usually have set prices for a set of wheels. If you make sure they know when you need them by, you'll get them by then.

The problem is I cannot go without my car for more than Sunday Monday. Thats the only days i'm off work and I don't think someone could powder coat in one day. Plus I like to do things myself. I was going to start on a Saturday night and hopefully be putting them on by tuesday morning. I do not have another set of wheels and tires to roll around on. Or a place to store the car past that time.
I was mainly wondering what kinda sanding you guys think would be the best to get the paint to adhere and look the best. I can always sand back down and get them powdercoated in the future when I have more time and money.

If you just have a stainless steel/ alloy wheels. just go to wal-mart or mid night auto and buy 4 red scotch-brites. Use those to scuff them up and that should be good enough to adhere paint
