So I'm looking at some craigslist subaru postings, and came across this little piece of work. austin.craigslist.org/cto/4516167545.html
Thing is it's got a blown center diff. To the point it is locked lol. He has a replacement, but I've been trying to figure out: First: Why the diff locked in the first place. I suppose mismatched final drive between front and rear wheels, cause he said it's got a 2.5 rs 5 speed in it, but not sure what rear diff (it was auto to start). The rs 5-speed had 4.11 final.
Second:The replacement diff he has is a phase I diff, so if it is a 98 or below 5 speed, I should be good if I replaced the blown diff, right? (Assuming the final drives are actually matching front to rear and nothing else is ruined).
Which brings me to the next question...
Third: Is the 5 speed dead?

According to this post, the 4EAT uses a 4.11 final drive as well: www.clubwrx.net/forums/vdc-vtc-4eat/79787-4eat-basic-information-faq.htmlI know Ecotech has replaced quite a few blown center diffs; I'm under the impression that it's not too bad of a repair and the rest of the trans should be okay. Worth calling them, or PMing Kevin Young on one of the 14 STL subaru groups, lol (I think he's on here, just can't remember his username). AFAIK what usually happens is that the viscous coupler locks up, rather than the teeth breaking on the center diff. You can roast the coupler doing a lot of rough off-road driving, a lot of e-brake turns, or towing the car with one axle lifted. Basically anything that shows prolonged and excessive speed differential between the front and rear axles. I want to say mconte05 has that engine in his new rally car if you have any questions about it.

Yeah he does have it, saw it at scooba. As far as turbo subaru motors go, it is cheapest by far. And pretty reliable, being closed deck and such low comp ratio. Read about someguy who swapped out the pistons, ported the head, put an intercooler and bigger turbo on and got it running 450hp (don't remember if whp). We will see if Conte sheds some light from his experience.
I will give ecotech a call. The car does have a tow hook on it haha, that may be our problem. Also the prev owner did lots of rallycross in it apparently. So it is likely the failure was caused by wear and not a gearing mismatch, intriguing. It was FWD to start as well, so anything could have been put in. I need to do some reading on the different diffs and their drive ratios. But if I find a mismatch, I can just put in an auto rear diff (4.11) and I'll be good, cause IIRC all 5-speed center diffs have 1:1 transfer ratio.

The EJ22 is a beast of an engine. I've seen some running upwards of 700whp.
That car is worth the price simply for that engine. Throw a 6 speed in and you're good.

So I called ecotech today and they said even if the five speed is still intact, it will need to be taken apart to get all the chunks the diff blew into the trans and assess damage. So I made an offer for $750 cause a rebuild is going to cost more than the car, so I may as well get another 5-speed. I'll let you guys know what happens
